The more you write, the more you’re wrong.
There’s so much to learn when you write. With art, you look at something, stare with all your Chi focused on it, burnin’ it up mentally and yet you question “What is this?” or “How is this supposed to be art?” The same goes for poetry. Even as a frequent poetry reader, sometimes I go “Is this supposed to be a poem?”. So, more than writing well, I want to know what good means when it comes to the poetic form.
I’ve been going through many courses/articles/books/etc. Here are my key findings. I’ll update this as I process and understand what good means.
Terms are in Bold. Thoughts are in Italics. Frameworks are in Underline.
- All of them are tools, not rules.
- The most important thing is remembering the most important thing. Prosody – how things fit together is what matters at the end of the day. There are two parts to prosody – the idea and the execution. A simple idea well executed is better than a complicated idea poorly executed or an incoherent idea with great technical execution.
- How to get better at describing the Idea? Object Writing – using your senses to write the details. Show before you tell. Use sensory descriptions as well as felt feelings.
- How to get better at the Form and Meaning? HAHAHA, coming next!
