Gimme

A while back, I got to take a golf lesson somewhere between here and the end of here. It was a fun time, and it would have been fun-er if I had dressed appropriately. And was properly hydrated. Luckily, you don’t have to move much while golfing. So, for today, let’s keep that behind us.

The coach went over the accessories, why there are different clubs in a kit (that was the biggest revelation for me. Wonder why I never figured it out myself…), the variety of games one could play in golf and also the different kinds of shots you could take. And just like any other sport, she started with the easiest ones, not the driver but using the pitching wedge and the lob wedge. We practiced getting the swing motion on the smooth green grass from 10-20 ft distance with the pitching wedge. And then, it was time for the end game!

She showed us to use the swing trainer (which was a plastic divider) and then told us, “In a game, if the ball’s close enough, a player can say, ‘That’s a gimme’, pick up the ball and end the game”. She proceeded to talk about how some aren’t even that close to the hole or skilled enough to call that a gimme. Then, she said, “To a golfer,” dropped the ball into the hole, looked as us and told, “this is the best sound in the world, why would you want to pick up the ball?”.
