We get told that we don’t remember much when we grow older because we don’t have interesting lives when we’re older.
I disagree with that. I’ve been doing a lot of interesting things, but I don’t remember them clearly because I’m always thinking about other things when I’m doing them. I’m planning too much into the future or worrying about the past — I can’t truly be in the present and enjoy it.
So, the only memories that remain are the ones where I really needed to be focused in the present and worked a long time for it. These usually involve high-pressure situations; unfortunately, our memories get biased towards the negative.
When we were young, playing was a focused activity. Exams were too, but there was a lot more positive focus. I think the stuff I’m doing lately are a lot of happy-fun-interesting-focused activities, so it’s something that I’m going to remember forever
